Resumes & Cover Letters

Preparing job applications can be intimidating, especially if you’re just entering the job market.  We often submit our resume with just the click of a button, but how can we make sure it makes a lasting impression when it’s received by recruiters? We want to help youth reach their career goals by getting their applications to the top of the stack.  We’ve got the guidelines and ground rules for preparing effective resumes and cover letters that can help jumpstart the job application process. By exploring important topics such as networking, resume and cover letter formatting, tailoring applications to the job posting, and emphasizing key skills and accomplishments, we’ll help youth understand how much they have to offer potential employers and how to put it all down on paper.

In the sections below we have provided additional resources to support our live event and to provide opportunities for youth to engage in personal development and career exploration.

Live Event

For this topic, we will hear from two dynamic speakers that are experts in helping job seekers create the perfect resume, Natasha Jeshani, President and CEO of Career Contacts and Valerie Le, Career Confidence Coach.

Following Thursday’s webinar, our Youth Leaders will lead a bilingual workshop to help youth improve their cover letters and resumes so they can stand out from the crowd. Because when you have a resume you can be proud of,  you’ll be empowered to go after the jobs that truly interest you!

If you are under the age of 30, we would appreciate your help in completing a brief post-webinar survey to assist us with evaluating the impact of the series for our funder, RBC Future Launch.  Be assured all responses will be kept fully confidential: https://bit.ly/survey_careers

Our ‘Build your resume’ module Offers youth step-by-step instructions on how to create their own resume, with an example resume and resume building tool to help bring it all together.

Career VLOGS

Our Career VLOGs provide an inside look into different careers, as each video asks professionals basic questions about how they started in their industry, what skills and education are required,  and where they see the opportunities for youth interesting in getting into this line of work today. These vlogs will provide a starting point for youth to explore a career option that they may have never thought of pursuing.
