Notre voyage d’\u00e9change d’\u00e9tudiants de l’\u00e9cole Nuvviti, Ivujivik, QC, au Coll\u00e8ge St-Jean-Vianney, Montr\u00e9al, QC, a ouvert l’esprit et l’avenir de nos \u00e9tudiants \u00e0 de nouvelles possibilit\u00e9s. L’\u00e9cole Nuvviti se trouve dans le village nordique d’Ivujivik, au Qu\u00e9bec, l’\u00e9tablissement le plus septentrional de toutes les provinces canadiennes, o\u00f9 vit une communaut\u00e9 inuite. Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 rejoints par des \u00e9l\u00e8ves du coll\u00e8ge St-Jean-Vianney de Montr\u00e9al, situ\u00e9 \u00e0 2 000 km de l\u00e0, et l’\u00e9change entre les \u00e9l\u00e8ves des deux \u00e9coles s’est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 extr\u00eamement enrichissant. En tant qu’accompagnateurs, nous avons supervis\u00e9 les \u00e9l\u00e8ves et nous nous sommes concentr\u00e9s sur des activit\u00e9s de groupe \u00e9ducatives et stimulantes.<\/p>\n

Tout au long de la semaine, les \u00e9tudiants ont eu des journ\u00e9es enti\u00e8res d’activit\u00e9s, commen\u00e7ant par un petit-d\u00e9jeuner matinal et se terminant le soir par une activit\u00e9 de groupe amusante. La plupart des soir\u00e9es se terminaient par une baignade dans la piscine de l’h\u00f4tel. Cela peut sembler une activit\u00e9 ordinaire, mais nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves l’attendaient avec impatience avant m\u00eame le d\u00e9but du voyage! Avant notre arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, nous avons command\u00e9 des maillots de bain pour tous nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves, car il n’y en a pas \u00e0 Ivujivik.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 notre arriv\u00e9e, Claudine et Philippe du Coll\u00e8ge St-Jean-Vianney nous attendaient aux arriv\u00e9es de l’a\u00e9roport avec un panneau dans notre langue, l’inuktitut!<\/strong> Apr\u00e8s notre journ\u00e9e de voyage, nos \u00e9tudiants ont d\u00e9gust\u00e9 leur premier d\u00eener dans un restaurant de Montr\u00e9al. Le dimanche matin, nous avons emprunt\u00e9 les transports en commun, une premi\u00e8re exp\u00e9rience excitante pour de nombreux \u00e9tudiants. Nous avons visit\u00e9 le Biod\u00f4me, le plan\u00e9tarium et l’insectarium, nous sommes pass\u00e9s devant les jardins ext\u00e9rieurs et nous avons d\u00e9jeun\u00e9 dans l’un des b\u00e2timents. Nous avons pass\u00e9 la soir\u00e9e \u00e0 faire du karting, \u00e0 jouer \u00e0 la salle d’arcade et \u00e0 faire du paintball avec des \u00e9tudiants du Sud. Dans notre communaut\u00e9, conduire un petit v\u00e9hicule et tirer sont des activit\u00e9s qui permettent d’obtenir de la nourriture de la nature, mais cette fois-ci, nous l’avons fait pour nous amuser.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Lundi, nous avons pass\u00e9 la journ\u00e9e \u00e0 rendre visite aux \u00e9tudiants du coll\u00e8ge St-Jean-Vianney. Ils ont montr\u00e9 \u00e0 nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves les diff\u00e9rentes installations de leur \u00e9cole, et nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 impressionn\u00e9s par leur b\u00e2timent de football, leur ar\u00e8ne, leur salle de danse et leur gymnase multisports ! Les \u00e9l\u00e8ves des deux \u00e9coles ont r\u00e9pondu \u00e0 des questions et tous les \u00e9l\u00e8ves ont d\u00e9jeun\u00e9 ensemble, ce qui leur a permis de tisser de nouveaux liens. Nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves ont jou\u00e9 au volley-ball et ont regard\u00e9 des danseurs et des joueurs de basket-ball pr\u00e9-universitaires. Apr\u00e8s la visite de l’\u00e9cole et le d\u00eener, nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves \u00e9taient impatients de se baigner dans la piscine de l’h\u00f4tel.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Le mardi, nous avons rencontr\u00e9 les \u00e9l\u00e8ves du sud au Mont-Royal et avons march\u00e9 du bas de la montagne jusqu’au sommet. Le voyage sur la route de la montagne a \u00e9t\u00e9 facile et amusant pour tout le monde, et les \u00e9tudiants se sont repos\u00e9s au sommet tout en profitant de la vue. L’apr\u00e8s-midi, nous nous sommes rendus dans une banque pour permettre \u00e0 nos \u00e9tudiants d’ouvrir un compte bancaire, ce qui est impossible \u00e0 Ivujivik. Avoir un compte bancaire est maintenant essentiel pour vivre au Canada, et notre voyage d’\u00e9change a permis d’ouvrir des portes importantes pour nos \u00e9tudiants.<\/strong> Le coll\u00e8ge St-Jean-Vianney nous a offert des billets pour un match de hockey et nous avons pass\u00e9 la soir\u00e9e au Centre Bell \u00e0 regarder le match. Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tonn\u00e9s de voir qu’il y avait plus de monde dans l’ar\u00e8ne que dans notre r\u00e9gion du Nunavik!<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Mercredi matin, nous sommes partis t\u00f4t pour nous rendre \u00e0 l’\u00e9cole Kiuna d’Odanak, la premi\u00e8re \u00e9cole des Premi\u00e8res nations que nous avons visit\u00e9e. Nous voulions montrer \u00e0 nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves qu’ils peuvent fr\u00e9quenter une \u00e9cole postsecondaire sensible \u00e0 leurs besoins culturels. On nous a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 les \u00e9l\u00e8ves, leurs salles de classe et leurs appartements, un mus\u00e9e, et nous avons mang\u00e9 de d\u00e9licieux sandwichs faits avec du pain local ainsi que du th\u00e9 et du chocolat chaud dans une cabane fabriqu\u00e9e comme la n\u00f4tre.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Jeudi, nous avons visit\u00e9 Nunavik Sivunitsavut, un \u00e9tablissement d’enseignement post-secondaire inuit tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9 par nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves du Nunavik. Nos \u00e9l\u00e8ves ont eu la chance d’assister \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sentation d’un cours par un enseignant et de rencontrer quelques \u00e9tudiants.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Le personnel leur a montr\u00e9 ce \u00e0 quoi un \u00e9tudiant de Nunavik Sivunitsavut peut s’attendre, une exp\u00e9rience inestimable qui devrait inciter nos \u00e9tudiants \u00e0 poursuivre leurs \u00e9tudes<\/strong>. Ensuite, nous nous sommes rendus au Centre des Sciences o\u00f9 nous avons regard\u00e9 une vid\u00e9o \u00e9ducative sur les animaux dans la salle IMAX et visit\u00e9 les diff\u00e9rentes expositions qui suscitent la curiosit\u00e9.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Notre vol de vendredi a \u00e9t\u00e9 retard\u00e9, mais nous en avons profit\u00e9 pour faire couper les cheveux des \u00e9l\u00e8ves et les laisser explorer et faire les magasins de la place Vertu.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Le samedi, nous nous sommes rendus t\u00f4t \u00e0 l’a\u00e9roport pour l’enregistrement et tout le monde \u00e9tait heureux de rentrer \u00e0 la maison avec les nouveaux souvenirs que nous avions cr\u00e9\u00e9s ensemble. Nuvviti school is in the northern village of Ivujivik, QC, the northernmost settlement in any Canadian province and home to an Inuit community. We were joined by students from 2000km away in St-Jean-Vianney College in Montr\u00e9al, and the exchange between students from both schools resulted in great benefits. <\/span>As chaperones, we supervised the students and focused on educational and inspiring group activities. Our approach promoted compassion between students of differing backgrounds and personalities<\/strong>.<\/p> Throughout the week, students had full days of activities, starting with an early breakfast and ending in the evening with a fun group activity. Most evenings ended with the group swimming in the hotel pool. It might seem like an ordinary activity, but our students were looking forward to this before the trip even started! Before our arrival to Montr\u00e9al, we ordered swimming suits for all our students because there are none available in Ivujivik.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_222837\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"509\"] \u00a0<\/p> On our arrival, Claudine and Philippe from St-Jean-Vianney College waited for us at arrivals of the airport with a sign in our language of Inuktitut!<\/strong> After our day of travelling, our students enjoyed their first dinner at a restaurant in Montr\u00e9al. On Sunday morning, we took public transportation which was an exciting first-time experience for many students. We visited the Biodome, the planetarium, the insectarium, passed by the outdoor gardens, and had lunch in one of the buildings. The evening was spent go-karting, at the arcade, and playing paintball with some of the southern students and it was nice to see both student groups bonding. In our community, driving a small vehicle and shooting are activities to get food from nature, but this time we did it to have fun.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> On Monday, the day was spent visiting the students at St-Jean-Vianney College. They showed our students their school\u2019s different facilities, and we were in awe of their full-sized soccer building, arena, dance room and multi-sport gym! There was a Q&A between students from both schools and all students ate lunch together, which gave an opportunity for students to create new bonds. Our students played volleyball and watched dance performers and pre-university basketball players. After the school visit and dinner, our students looked forward to swimming in the hotel pool.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_222807\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"616\"] \u00a0<\/p> On Tuesday, we met the southern students at Mont-Royal and walked from the bottom of the mountain to the top. The journey up the road of the mountain was easy and fun for everyone, and students rested at the top while enjoying the view. In the afternoon, we went to a bank to let our students open a bank account, something that is impossible in Ivujivik. Having a bank account is now essential to living in Canada, and our exchange trip was able to open important doors for our students<\/strong>. St-Jean-Vianney-College gifted us tickets to a hockey game, and we spent the evening at the Bell Center watching the game. We were amazed that there were more people in the arena than in our region of Nunavik!<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> On Wednesday morning we left early to reach Kiuna school in Odanak, the first First-Nations school we visited. We wanted to show our students that they can attend a post-secondary school sensitive to their cultural needs<\/strong>. We were introduced to the students, their classrooms and apartments, a museum, and ate delicious sandwiches made from local bread along with tea and hot chocolate in a cabin that was made just like ours. One student from Kiuna surprised us by telling us his father grew up in Ivujivik! Our students spent the rest of the afternoon playing laser tag and bowling, activities not yet available in Ivujivik but hopefully this will inspire our students.<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> On Thursday, we visited Nunavik Sivunitsavut, a popular post-secondary Inuit institution for our students in Nunavik. Our students had a chance to experience a preview of one class by a teacher and meet a few of the students. The staff showed them what a student attending Nunavik Sivunitsavut could expect, this was an invaluable experience that we planned to inspire our students to further their education<\/strong>. After, we went to the Centre des sciences where we watched an educational video about animals in the IMAX room and visited the different curiosity-inducing exhibits.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Our Friday flight was delayed but we made the best of it by getting the students haircuts and let them explore and shop at Place-Vertu. On Saturday, we headed to the airport early to check in and everyone was happy to go home with the new memories we created together<\/strong>.
