Si quelqu’un m’avait dit il y a quelques mois que j’aurais la chance de skier dans l’un des plus beaux endroits au monde, je ne l’aurais pas cru. Si quelqu’un m’avait \u00e9galement dit que j’allais vivre l’exp\u00e9rience d’une vie en visitant un endroit du Canada o\u00f9 je n’\u00e9tais jamais all\u00e9, tout en me faisant de nouveaux amis en cours de route, je ne l’aurais certainement pas cru. Mais je suis ici en train d’\u00e9crire ce blog pour raconter aux gens l’incroyable aventure qu’Experiences Canada a organis\u00e9e pour mon \u00e9quipe de ski.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pour commencer le voyage, nous sommes arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 l’a\u00e9roport d’Ottawa et avons enregistr\u00e9 nos bagages et nos sacs de ski. Pendant les quatre heures de vol, nous avons jou\u00e9 \u00e0 des jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et regard\u00e9 des films avec nos amis. Une fois arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 l’a\u00e9roport de Calgary, nous avons rencontr\u00e9 nos partenaires d’\u00e9change pour la premi\u00e8re fois et nous sommes rendus chez eux pour profiter d’un sommeil bien m\u00e9rit\u00e9. \u00c0 partir de l\u00e0, nos journ\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 remplies de ski, d’activit\u00e9s amusantes et de d\u00e9couvertes \u00e0 Calgary, au lac Louise et enfin au centre nordique de\u00a0Canmore. Voici quelques exemples d’activit\u00e9s auxquelles nous avons particip\u00e9 pendant notre s\u00e9jour en Alberta : patinage \u00e0 l’Oval\u00a0olympique de Calgary, s\u00e9jour dans une auberge \u00e0 Lake Louise et ski \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re entre l’Alberta et la Colombie-Britannique.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L’un des moments forts de ce voyage a \u00e9t\u00e9 la chance d’assister \u00e0 une course de la Coupe du monde de para-ski au Centre nordique de\u00a0Canmore. Lors de cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement, nous avons vu d’incroyables athl\u00e8tes s’affronter au plus haut niveau de notre sport et nous avons essay\u00e9 le biathlon pour la premi\u00e8re fois. Une semaine plus tard, apr\u00e8s des adieux \u00e9mouvants, les athl\u00e8tes de\u00a0Nakkertok\u00a0ont pris l’avion pour rentrer chez eux, mais ils attendaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 avec impatience l’arriv\u00e9e de nos partenaires d’\u00e9change de\u00a0Foothills\u00a0\u00e0 Ottawa.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Un mois plus tard, \u00e0 notre grande joie, nos amis de\u00a0Foothills\u00a0ont atterri \u00e0 Ottawa. Depuis l’a\u00e9roport, ils ont pris un bus et nous ont rejoints \u00e0 notre club de ski \u00e0 Gatineau. Ce soir-l\u00e0, nous leur avons fait visiter les pistes de\u00a0Nakkertok, puis nous avons organis\u00e9 un d\u00e9licieux repas-partage. Leurs journ\u00e9es ici \u00e0 Ottawa ont \u00e9t\u00e9 remplies de ski dans le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre parc de Gatineau, de laser tag, d’escalade, de beaucoup de patinage, d’abord sur l’embl\u00e9matique canal Rideau, puis dans la for\u00eat, dans la campagne d’Ottawa. Nous avons \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 une grande chasse au tr\u00e9sor dans le centre-ville, qui nous a permis de d\u00e9couvrir de nombreux lieux historiques de notre belle ville. Nous avons m\u00eame pu d\u00e9jeuner dans l’un des b\u00e2timents du Parlement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Introduction<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This past month, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a cultural exchange program organized by Experiences Canada and Mistassiny School and Glebe school. The trip was a beautiful blend of two worlds, students from Ottawa came to experience life in our Alberta communities Edmonton, Sandy Lake, and Wabasca, and then we traveled to Ottawa to immerse ourselves in their fast-paced city life. What started as a nervous meeting between strangers ended with friendships so strong that saying goodbye brought us all to tears.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Part 1: The Ottawa Students Visit Alberta \u2013 Laughter, Theatre, and Midnight Chases<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When the Ottawa group first arrived, we didn\u2019t head straight to our small towns. Instead, we kicked things off with two nights in Edmonton, where the real bonding began.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Hotel Hangouts & First Impressions<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We stayed at a hotel, and within hours, the nerves started fading. Junk food piled up in rooms, and music blared from someone\u2019s speaker. I\u2019d only talked to my \"twin\" Eliot online before this but seeing him in person felt like reuniting with an old friend. (Though I won\u2019t lie\u2014some of the others still seemed a little intimidating at first\u2026.)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Comedic Dinner Theatre Night<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One evening, we went to a dinner theatre show, and it was *exactly* what we needed. Between the cheesy jokes, the male actors putting on maid dresses, and the shared embarrassment of being singled out, we were all laughing so hard our stomachs hurt. That night, the \"Ottawa kids\" stopped feeling like strangers and started feeling like friends.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Sandy Lake\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When we finally arrived in Sandy Lake, the real adventure began. After days of teaching them our traditions like drum-making and storytelling, we let loose with games under the open sky. Manhunt outside the school became legendary.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

- The Ottawa group had never played in a place where the only light came from the moon and the distant glow of the school windows.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

- Branches cracked underfoot, whispers carried through the trees, and at one point, someone screamed when a rabbit darted past.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

- By the end, we were always exhausted but not in a bad way because of all the running and chasing we would do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It was during those nights, running through the field without lights and laughter, that I realized how much we were all the same, just kids thrilled by the same games, no matter where we came from.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Part 2: Our Turn in Ottawa \u2013 A World of Difference<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A week later, we flew to Ottawa to stay with our twins\u2019 families. The culture shock was real:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

City Life vs. Small-Town Life: In Ottawa, everything was close by, museums, cafes, even their school. I loved how walkable the city was, though I missed the quiet, open spaces of home. The constant noise and crowds took some getting used to!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

School Differences: Their classrooms were fuller, their schedules more structured. Back in Wabasca, our school feels like a big family, in Ottawa, it was more formal. It made me appreciate the closeness of our community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Twinning Bonds: Living with Eliot\u2019s family was surreal. They welcomed me like I was one of their own, showing me their favorite spots in the city. By the end, it felt like leaving a second home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Hardest Part: Goodbyes<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The trip\u2019s end hit us harder than any of us expected. At the airport, hugs turned into tears even the \"tough\" kids in our group broke down. I hadn\u2019t realized how close we\u2019d all grown until that moment. Months later, we still text daily sending memes or reminiscing about inside jokes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What I Learned<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  1. Friendship Has No Boundaries: Distance and different backgrounds don\u2019t matter when you connect on a human level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  2. Perspective Is Everything: Seeing Ottawa\u2019s hustle made me grateful for my town\u2019s peace but also curious about city opportunities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  3. Growth Happens Outside Comfort Zones: From my shaky \"hello\" at the airport to sobbing goodbyes, this trip stretched me in the best way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ol>

    If I could relive this experience, I\u2019d do it in a heartbeat. To anyone considering an exchange, take the chance, you\u2019ll gain more than just memories, you\u2019ll gain a second brother or sister. And to my Ottawa friends, if you\u2019re reading this, I miss you guys so much, I hope we can meet again.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
